Serotaxonomy of the Solanaceae: A Preliminary Survey

W. G. TUCKER

Department of Botany, University of Birmingham

Accepted: 20 May 1968

Saline-soluble proteins were extracted from seeds of species representing 15 of the genera of the Solanaceae. Antisera were raised to seven of these. The cross reactions of the antigens and the antisera were studied, and listed in order of strength of reaction. From these a diagram was constructed which showed the strongest (so-called Group I) cross reactions between the immunogens. Some of the data are briefly amplified by cross reactions using absorbed antisera. The cross reactions were extensive throughout the family, so eight species from outside the family were also extracted and briefly investigated. The cross reactions produced with this material were faint or lacking altogether, but those from the related family Scrophulariaceae were of a similar strength to that produced by Schizanthus, a genus currently placed in the Solanaceae but formerly included in the Scrophulariaceae. Existing classifications of the family are mentioned, and the relevance of these experimental data is briefly discussed.
