Phenotypic Variation in Flower Colour within the Anemone coronaria Cultivars
Department of Applied Genetics, John Innes Institute Colney Lane, Norwich NOR 70F
Received: 27 April 1970
Three anthocyanidin (aglycone) moieties of the anthocyanins present in petal tissue of different Anemone coronaria phenotypes were identified; Pelargonidin, delphinidin, and cyanidin. A method is described that permits rapid identification and quantification of the mixed aglycones contained in 2 N hydrochloric acid hydrolysates of petal-tissue extract. Using the method, a survey of 212 field-grown phenotypes was conducted. Prior to analysis, flowers were classified into seven colour groups according to the Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart. The results indicated that colour groupings corresponded to characteristic aglycone distribution ratios. The ratio for a given colour group was maintained by group members despite a range in the intensity of pigmentation.
