Induction of a Periderm-like Tissue in Excised Roots of the Fern Ophioglossum petiolatum Hook
Department of Botany, University of Guelph Guelph, Ontario, Canada
Received: 27 April 1970
Basal applications of plant growth regulators to excised roots of Ophioglossum induce modifications in the outer cortical cells. Benzyladenine initiates periclinal divisions in these outer cells producing a periderm-like tissue while 2,4-D causes cell enlargement only. Walls of the outer cells of the periderm-like tissue are resistant to sulphuric acid and stain with Sudan IV and presumably are suberized.
