Rates of Mitosis in Shoot Apices of Potatoes at the Beginning and End of Dormancy
Botany School, University of Oxford
Received: 9 December 1972
Rates of mitosis in regions of the shoot apices of potatoes have been measured by accumulating metaphases under the influence of colchicine. In sprouting buds excised from dormant tubers the cell-doubling time is 74 h on the flanks of the meristem and 117 h at the summit. In stolons about to start tuberization the reduction in meristematic activity affects the flanks more than the summit. At all stages the pith zone has the lowest rate of mitosis and the procambium the highest.
