Fusarium caeruleum produced an arabanase which showed maximal activity at pH 3·5 and which liberated arabinose and its oligomers from
-l,3-arabinofuranan and isolated potato tuber parenchyma cell walls. This enzyme was most active in dry rot lesions produced in susceptible potato tubers by a fast-growing isolate of F. caeruleum. This arabanase is not of primary importance in causing tissue maceration, protoplast death or electrolyte loss but it may play a secondary role in these processes.
