A Model of Leaf Carbon Metabolism

D. A. CHARLES-EDWARDS and L. J. LUDWIG

Glasshouse Crops Research Institute Littlehampton, Sussex, BN16 3PU

Received: 27 November 1974

A model relating the levels of some carbon metabolites in the leaves of C3 plant species to the light and carbon dioxide environment of the leaf is constructed, and provides a basis for quantitative investigation of the diurnal variations in the carbon metabolite levels. The model also predicts relationships between the respiratory activity of the leaf during the night and the preceding photosynthetic activity of the leaf.
