Wind Damage to the Surface of Strawberry Leaves

Large brown lesions form on the leaves of the Strawberry cv. Cambridge Favourite after exposure to wind. On both surfaces the damaged epidermis is coloured light brown, but below the adaxial surface there is in addition, a pattern of discoloured palisade cells outlining the anticlinal walls of the epidermis, intensifying the colouring of the lesion.

Examination of the surface of these lesions and of comparable undamaged leaf surfaces using a scanning electron microscope has shown that the visible damage is associated with extensive collapse of the periclinal walls of the epidermis. Surface waxes show disruption and smoothing following wind damage.
