Changes with Age in the Status of Water and Tissue Characteristics in Individual Leaves of Vicia faba L.

A. H. KASSAM1 and J. F. ELSTON

Department of Agricultural Botany, the University Reading, England

Received: 30 June 1975

Leaf-water potential ({psi}) and relative water content (R) of leaves at different position on the plant were different on any one day. This was because the effect of environment on {psi} and R and of age on physical and chemical properties of tissues varied with the position of the leaf. Changes with age in the physical and chemical properties of a leaf depended on the time it emerged in the life of the plant.
