The Galls on Forsythia: Inoculation Studies
School of Plant Biology, University College of North Wales Bangor, Gwynedd, LL57 2UW
Received: 5 July 1976
Two fungi, Fusarium lateritium and Phomopsis dominici and two bacteria (S3) and (G1) resembling Agrobacterium radiobacter var. tumefaciens and Corynebacterium fascians isolated from galls on Forsythia intermedia failed to produce galls upon reinoculation. Similarly, cultures of C. fascians, Pseudomonas savastanoi and P. savastanoi var. fraxini failed to induce galls. Both A. radiobacter var. tumefaciens and tumerous carrot tissue infected with A. radiobacter var. rhizogenes produced tumerous tissue in inoculated plants but only the latter induced an overgrowth resembling a natural gall on Forsythia.
