Flower formation in Liatris spicata Willd. was not affected by photoperiodic treatments, but long days (16 h) had a pronounced effect on elongation of the flowering stem. An illuminance of 2 Ix was sufficient to produce near maximal elongation.
Long days caused a decrease in endogenous gibberellins in the tips of rapidly elongating stems and decreased the number of flowering stems per corm.
