Studies with Liatris spicata Willd. 2. Effects of Photoperiod on Stem Extension, Flowering and Gibberellin Content

N. ZIESLIN and Z. GELLER

Department of Ornamental Horticulture, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Rehovot 76 100, Israel

Accepted: 11 February 1983

Flower formation in Liatris spicata Willd. was not affected by photoperiodic treatments, but long days (16 h) had a pronounced effect on elongation of the flowering stem. An illuminance of 2 Ix was sufficient to produce near maximal elongation.

Long days caused a decrease in endogenous gibberellins in the tips of rapidly elongating stems and decreased the number of flowering stems per corm.

Liatris spicata, elongation, flowering, gibberellin, light, photoperiod
