Desiccation Intolerance in Seeds of Zizania palustris is Not Related to Developmental Age or the Duration of Post-harvest Storage

Freshly harvested seeds of Zizania palustris L. representing four distinct stages of development were intolerant of desiccation. Rapid drying did not improve survival. The relationship between probit viability and embryo moisture content for freshly harvested mature seeds was identical to that described in an earlier publication for seeds previously stored fully imbibed at low temperatures to remove dormancy. A small reduction in embryo moisture content during the first 3 d of drying at 15% r.h. and 15°C led to a highly sigificant (P < 0.01) increase in the proportion of fresh seeds capable of germination in response to a range of dormancy breaking factors including giberellins. Results are discussed in relation to previous work on recalcitrant seeds and to the widely reported developmental changes in orthodox seeds which are triggered by desiccation.
