The Aril of the Strelitzia reginae Banks Seed: Structure and Histochemistry
Istituto Botanico Hanbury Università di Genova Cor so Dogali 1C, 16136 Genova, Italy
Accepted: 21 December 1990
Structural and histochemical aspects of the seed aril in Strelitzia reginae Banks were studied by bright field and fluorescence microscopy, and by SEM. In cross-section, a typical clover leaf-like pattern of the aril threads and of the zone from which these arise, was demonstrated. This structure is due to cellulosic thickenings of the cell wall. Histochemical tests showed that the cell walls appear heavily impregnated with a suberin-like component.
