Papillate Tepal Hoods and Delayed Pollen Germination inAlbucaL. (Liliaceae)

B. L. KINGSTON+,

Department of Botany, University of Bristol, UK

January 19, 1998 ; February 24, 1998 . May 16, 1998 .

ABSTRACT

In the genusAlbuca, pollen germination is delayed until the tepals close around the stigma immediately before the onset of floral senescence. At this time, papillae on the tepal apices and the stigma swell and produce an exudate in which pollen rapidly germinates. No pollen germination occurs when the tepals are artificially prevented from closing around the stigma.Copyright 1998 Annals of Botany Company

Albuca, Liliaceae, delayed pollen germination, gametophytic self-incompatibility, perianth contributing to pollen germination, pollen tube inhibition in ovary.
