Saccate conifer pollen is wettable and unsinkable

Hydrodynamic properties of saccate and nonsaccate pollen of 12 conifers, and spores of three ferns and one lycopod, are assessed by Salter et al. (pp. 133-144). They contend that a combination of buoyancy, wettability and saccus position assists pollination and influences grain orientation at the nucellus in Prumnopitys (Podocarpaceae).
