No sex in Polygonum viviparum

Fruit set is virtually absent in this common arctic and alpine perennial. Diggle et al. (pp. 145-156) show that, although malfunctions of male and female gametophyte development are common, these defects are not responsible for the unusually low fruit production. Rather, absence of fruit is due to a low rate of fertilization and to embryo/fruit abortion.
