Painting of parental chromatin in interspecific Beta hybrids
Genomes of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) hybrids originating from crosses with wild Beta species were investigated by multicolour fluorescent in situ hybridization with species-specific satellites and genomic DNA. Desel et al. (pp. 171-181) show that parental chromosomes and chromosome fragments can clearly be distinguished. Wild beet translocations as small as 1 Mbp are detectable by this means.
