Foliar biomass allocation and physiological activity in relation to site nutrient availability and tree size

In a study of Betula species by Niinemets et al. (pp. 191-204), leaf biomass, leaf area and physiological activity are enhanced by increased soil nitrogen availability. Greater tree height was linked to decreased leaf area and physiological activity per unit leaf biomass.
