Influence of shoot light conditions on rhizosphere pH

The role of photosynthesis on rootinduced pH changes along the root axis of cowpea has been examined by Rao et al. (pp. 213-220). They show the induction of localized acidification with the onset of shoot illumination when nitrate is available. Total photosynthesis of the plant regulates the intensity of light-induced acidification of the rhizosphere.
