Calcium link to aluminium toxicity

Disturbance of cytoplasmic Ca2+ ([Ca2+]cyt) homeostasis is generally believed to be the primary trigger of Al toxicity. Ma et al. (pp. 241-244) report on an increase in Ca2cyt in root apical cells in rye as the primary effect of Al toxicity - the same mechanism reported previously in wheat.
