Immobilization of phosphorus through metal plaque formation
Iron and manganese plaque deposits are known to form on the outer surface of roots of wetland plants. Batty et al. (pp. 443-449) reveal that deposits may also be formed from aluminium. Such plaques may interfere with mineral nutrient uptake. The authors show that iron and/or aluminium plaques immobilize the essential nutrient phosphorus at the root surface.
