Carbon balance of tomato plants in prolonged darkness

Whole-plant respiration decreases in relation to a decline in availability of carbohydrates in vegetative organs. In contrast, fruits maintain fairly stable carbohydrate concentrations and the decrease in their growth rate is moderate whatever their initial carbohydrate resources. Gary et al. (pp. 429-438) examine the relevance of a simple model in these source-limited conditions.
