When it comes to the level of sophistication of our knowledge about seed development, dormancy and germination, we have come a very long way in only a dozen years. Contrast the contents of the present volume with a reading of the 1994 edition of the Bewley and Black classic, Seeds (New York: Plenum Press). These areas of research have become much more active, exploiting the tools of molecular biology and genetics to great advantage. Bradford and Nonogaki have assembled a world-class group of experts who have personally contributed to these efforts. More importantly, most of the contributors have sufficient depth in seed biology to present overviews that have physiological context, a property still lacking in many molecularly orientated reports of plant research. The state of the art in the topic areas (through 2005–06) is nicely summarized.
While the emphasis of the volume is on dormancy and germination, one cannot discuss
