About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover illustration: The inset photograph shows tension wood in aspen (Populus tremula × tremuloides). This specialized wood tissue is distinguished by the occurrence of gelatinous cell wall layers in fibres (red), marked by the presence of a xyloglucan endotransglycosylase/hydrolase (green label). A special design aspect of these cell wall layers leads to the development of a high tensile stress during maturation. See Mellerowicz et al. (pp. 659-665).
