Cover illustration: The inset cover imagine picture shows a colourful drawing of the eggplant (Solanum melongena) from Lüchanyan Bencao, an ancient Chinese book produced in 1220 AD (South Song Dynasty) based on plants from Zhejiang Province, eastern China. As far as is known, this is the first colourful drawing of the eggplant (reproduced here with permission of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) and provides valuable evidence about the early domesticated form of this species.
