Cover illustration: The line diagram represents a dicotyledonous half-leaf in which the lateral veins run more or less straight to the edge. The leaves of many temperate tree species are like this, including the elm leaf depicted. In at least 23 such species, a single general formula suffices to relate the lengths and positions of these veins. See Burton, pp. 149–156.
