Cover illustration: The inset cover photographs show the attachment of a branch to the stem in a Wollemi pine sapling. Partial removal of the bark and cortical tissues (right) reveals branch-base xylem travelling within the stem cortex for several centimetres before joining stem xylem. Here, branch xylem is narrow and this may constrict water flow to the leaves. See Burrows et al., pp. 609-623.
